Astronomical Science with Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics: A Brief Review, a Current Snapshot, and a Bright Future
نویسنده
چکیده
We briefly discuss the past, present, and future state of astronomical science with laser guide star adaptive optics (LGS AO). We present a tabulation of refereed science papers from LGS AO, amounting to a total of 23 publications as of May 2006. The first decade of LGS AO science (1995–2004) was marked by modest science productivity (≈1 paper/year), as LGS systems were being implemented and commissioned. The last two years have seen explosive science growth (≈1 paper/month), largely due to the new LGS system on the Keck II 10meter telescope, and point to an exciting new era for high angular resolution science. To illustrate the achievable on-sky performance, we present an extensive collection of Keck LGS performance measurements from the first year of our brown dwarf near-IR imaging survey. We summarize the current strengths and weaknesses of LGS compared to Hubble Space Telescope, offer a list of desired improvements, and look forward to a bright future for LGS given its wide-scale implementation on large ground-based telescopes.

Atmospheric Sodium Column Density Monitoring
In Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (AO), a laser is used to excite the mesospheric (90km altitude) sodium (Na) layer and thereby creates an artiicial star that can be used as reference for the AO wavefront sensor. The intensity of the created star depends strongly on the amount of Na present in the atmosphere. Experiences to measure the column density and details of excitation of scattering pr...
متن کاملRayleigh Laser Guide Star Systems: Application to UnISIS
Laser guide stars created by Rayleigh scattering provide a reasonable means to monitor atmospheric wavefront distortions for real-time correction by adaptive optics systems. Because of the λ wavelength dependence of Rayleigh scattering, short wavelength lasers are a logical first choice for astronomical laser guide star systems, and in this paper we describe the results from a sustained experim...
متن کاملLaser guide star adaptive optics imaging polarimetry of Herbig Ae/Be stars.
We have used laser guide star adaptive optics and a near-infrared dual-channel imaging polarimeter to observe light scattered in the circumstellar environment of Herbig Ae/Be stars on scales of 100 to 300 astronomical units. We revealed a strongly polarized, biconical nebula 10 arc seconds (6000 astronomical units) in diameter around the star LkHalpha 198 and also observed a polarized jet-like ...

متن کاملKeck Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics: Science Verification Results
In this paper we describe the operational strategy and performance of the Keck Observatory laser guidestar adaptive optics system, and showcase some early science verification images and results. Being the first laser guidestar system on an 8–10 m class telescope, the Keck laser guidestar adaptive optics system serves as a testbed for observing techniques and control algorithms. We highlight th...
